Alien Munchtime
Grades: 1-3

Practice your subtraction facts while having fun with the aliens!"  Great to use on the Smartboard as it is fast and easy game that can get multiple students involved in a small amount of time.

Summary: "Lucy is the costume designer for Just4You Movies. Help her dress the different actors and actresses while practicing your subtraction facts. Summary:  Use groups of ten to help you subtract two digit numbers.  This game breaks subtraction down step by step by using groups of ten to help you reach your answer.  It can be a bit complicated but once you get it, it's another strategy to help you with subtraction.

Adding - Bees on the Flower

Summary:Relate subtraction to taking away by using calculations within contexts. Try putting characters in unusual contexts - parrots at the bus stop, fish in a tree...! Ask pupils to record the calculation behind the number story.

Summary: Describe and solve problems in different contexts, using number stories.
For example, there are five parrots in this tree, and two more in the other tree... so let's start with 5 and add on the others... how many are there all together?
Try unusual contexts, such as fish at the bus stop or submarines in a tree!

Comparing Sweets - Subtraction 
Grades: 2-3
Summary:  Ask pupils to give various amounts of sweets to the two children, then complete the number sentence below.
Challenge pupils to write the problem as a calulation (eg 6 - 3 = 3), then check with the reveal.

Or ask them to show a particular sum, eg 'what is the difference between 5 and 12? How can you show that using the sweets?'

Summary:  The aliens have landed!  Bipods are aliens with two legs, Tripods are aliens with three legs.  Pick a total amount of legs you want and figure out how to reach that total using a T-Chart.
