All about Plants
1) Factors Affecting GrowthGrades: 1, 3
Summary: In this virtual animation experiment, students test whether water, light and temperature affects whether the seed will grow into healthy plants. There are four parts of this activity, each testing a different factor. The fifth part is a quiz.
How to integrate: Shared, Guided
This is a life-saver when the plants you have grown in your classroom isn't working or you are running out of time to test each factor in the time allotted to complete the unit. This is also a good review for the end of the unit test.
2) Parts of the Plants - Activities and Lessons
Grades: 1,3
Summary: This site includes a selection of activities designed to help students develop their understanding of plants. The activities are based and designed to reinforce the understanding of the parts of the plants: stem, petal, leaf, root, stigma, stamen and sepal.
Each of the three activities also include answers.
The activities are divided by four sections:
a) The Starter Activity - Buzzard Game
Summary: In this interactive game, students learn to identify parts of the plant and the functions by matching the two set of cards. Each students can stand on the side of the Smart Board and press the button when the cards match to gain the points.
How to integrate: Shared
A fun review game for students to practice their knowledge. Not too challenging but a good warm-up.
b) The Main Session - Rating the Parts of the Plant
Summary: Students must rate five parts of that plant in order of importance. They must also include one or two sentences as to why they choose that part.
How to integrate: Independent
This is a great game to get students not only to identify the function of each of the parts of the plant but also synthesizes their knowledge by rating which one is more important and why.
c) The Plenary - Parts of the plants
Summary: Here students must think about what would happen if the plant didn't have one of the following parts. There is a section for students to type in their answers, along with a diagram of a plant.
How to integrate: Independent
This is another great activity to get students to think about what they are learning and how each part is connected and how they work together.
3) Plant Reproduction Interactive Whiteboard Activity
Grades: 1, 3
Summary: There are two lessons in this activity package.
Activity 1
Part 1: drag the scissors over the flower to cut it and put it together again by dragging and dropping into the correct spaces
Part 2: Identify a flower's male and female parts and drag the butterfly to pollinate the flower.
Activity 2
Part 1: Click on the correct answer in each sentence
Part 2: Drag the seed into each box
Part 3: Click on each box in the correct order to navigate the bee
4) Star Garden
Grades: 1,3
Summary: Dr. Evil has destroyed the plant life in Star Garden. It is our job to help Jane and John to restore the plants by collecting stars and unlocking the secret garden that has been hidden. There are four levels in total, the last one must be unlocked by playing through the other three gardens. Each garden has five questions about different parts of the plant. When the students answers all the questions correctly they will get the star.
How to integrate: Shared, Independent
This game is actually very informative and tests the students knowledge. Because of it's "drag-and-drop" functions, it's an excellent site to use on the Smart Board.
5) BBC - Helping Plants Grow
Grades: 1, 3
Summary: Students can test different factors, heat, water, and light to see which combination will grow the tallest plant.
How to integrate: Shared, Independent
This interactive experiments lets students discover what the ideal factors are when growing a plant.
6) BBC - Life Cycles
Grade: 3
Summary: Students must drag and drop each of the parts of the plants into the labeled boxes.
How to Integrate: Shared
A check for understanding that is quick and easy. Great for the Smart Board.
7) Pollen Park
Grade: 1, 3
Summary: Help Bumbles to collect as many Pollen Particles as possible in order to save teh Hive and cheer up the Queen. There are five sections in Pollen Park:
Flower Garden - Labeling parts of the flower,
Picnic Area - Discover which plants are pollinated by insects and which are by wind
Woodland Walk - Choose the best method for seeds dispersal: Explosion, Wind, Animals and Water
Park Lake - Turn on 3 conditions(light, warmth, soil, water, oxygen) to see if you can make the seed in the jar grow
Play Area - Play a word search based on the following topics: flower parts, reproduction, seeds, germination
How to Integrate: Shared, Independent
Each of the "parks" are a lessons on it's own. This is also a great game for students to practice and review the unit.
8) Build a Salad
Grades: 1, 3
Summary: Students must pick the plant and identify whether it is a root, stem, leaf, fruit, or flower. After they have correctly selected the parts of the plant they get to read over the different parts of a a plant that we eat in our salads.
How to integrate: Shared, Modeled
It's a short lesson/activity. Better as hooks, or checks for understanding. After the activity there is also a recipe for students to make their own salad.
