1) Cardinal Direction 
Grade: 1-2
Strand: Canada and World Connections
Summary: Pearson designed a simple site for students to become familiar with cardinal direction.   Students must steer the car using the cardinal direction, towards the parking space.

How to integrate: Modeled and Shared
Students will have a great time trying to direct the car by clicking on the directions on the Smartboard.  Use it as a review of past knowledge or a quick hook.


2) Build your own Neighbourhood
Grade: 1
Strand: Canada and World Connections
Summary:  Students can have fun building different parts of a community by dragging and dropping "stamps" or pictures onto the background.


How to integrate:  Shared, Modelled
Design a neighborhood as a class.  Have students work in groups to design a community as a class.


3) Map it Canada
Grade: 4
Strand: Canada and World Connections
Summary: A quick and easy way to test your students knowledge on capital cities, provinces, landmarks and animals that is unique to each province.   Students must drag and drop the different topics to it's location.

How to integrate: Shared, Modelled, Independent
Turn this site to a great review of the unit by having students complete in groups to answer the questions.




4) Connect the World with Buster
Grade: 2
Strand: Canada and World Connections
Summary:  Bingo meets concentration.  Buster has a board and the student/class has a board.  Students must try to match the card that Buster flips over.  The first person who gets a line wins.   Cards will include flags, food and other cultural symbols relating to different countries around the world.

How to integrate: Shared, Independent
Great hook to start the country unit.


5) Map Skills
Grade: 2-4
Strand: Canada and World Connections
Summary: BBC has a comprehensive site that covers all mapping skills from Compass, Grids, Symbols and Keys and Scale.  Each section has a quick explanation on the topic followed by a mini -game.

How to integrate: Shared, Modeled, Independent
Great for an overview or introduction to the topic of mapping.  Also great for students to review.


6) Globequest -  World of Wonders
Grades: 2-4
Strand: Canada and World Connections
Summary:  Students must collect points to travel across the world.  Two modes - Short version with 8 countries and Long Version 14 countries.  Points are collected by answering questions correctly based on different cultures and countries. 

How to integrate:  Shared, Independent
A fun game for students to begin exploring the different countries or as a review.

7) Pirates ... Maps and Traps 
Grades: 2-4
Strand: Canada and World Connectiosn
Summary:   Search the ocean in search of hidden treasure! Collect gems along the way to exchange at the trading post for tips and tricks to help find the treasure using the cardinal directions. Be wary of the pirates - if you run into a pirate boat, you will be sent back to the start.

How to integrate: Modeled, Independent
This game requires the arrow keys so it would be more fitting to have students complete this activity on their own computer.
