Angles, angles everywhere!

1) Geoboard
Grades: 1-8
Summary:  Here's a great tool for the Smartboard.  A virtual geoboard lets the whole class see the concepts up close.

How to integrate: Modeled
This is a great way to model geoboards to the class.

2) Banana Hunt
Grades: 3-6
Summary: Do you know your angles? Bananas are hidden around the circle.  Set the angle and find the banana.

How to integrate: Modeled and Shared
Divide the class into two teams and see which team gets more angles in a set amount of time.

3) Hitting the Target - Learning angles through sports
Grades: 3-5
Summary: This great site has four sport games to teach and test students how to measure angles (snooker), find right angles (soccer), acute angles (tennis) and obtuse angles (cricket).  Each sport will show students and ask students to identify the appropriate angles.

How to integrate: Shared and Independent
The game also gives you options to play in teams.  Separate the students and have them compete against each other.

4) Squirt the Dog
Grades: 3-5
Summary: Familiarize students with angles in a circle by trying to squirt the dog.  The dog will be placed around the key points of the circle.  Students must select from a list on the bottom to see which angle would be the one to squirt the dog.

How to integrate: Shared and Independent
A great practice game or a review for students on angles and circles.

5) Star Gazing
Grades: 3-6
Summary: Help Digit fill his Scrapbook by setting the telescope to at the right angle to find the planets before the time runs out.  The more rounds you play the harder the angles get.

How to integrate: Shared and Independent
This one is also another hard one for the Smartboard because you need to use the keyboard, but there are always ways around it.  Try the virtual keyboard or even have the students call out the angles so you can input it.

6) Golf Tee Off
Grades: 3-5
Summary:  A great way for students to learn about angles in a circle.  Use the control buttons to direct the force and the angle in which Tumbleweed putts. There are nine holes in total.

How to integrate:  Shared, Independent
Great fun for students - highlight the angles and the vocabulary to ensure that students are connecting the ideas of this game to math.

7) Snowboard
Grades: 3-6
Summary: Hit the slopes with Vikings Helga and Darcy! There are six tricks that teaches students different angles on the board.  Students must run their mouse over the numbers and click on the last number in order to unlock the next trick.

How to integrate:  Shared, independent
This is a great game to use on the SmartBoard.  All you have to do it run your mouse over the numbers.  Then work on the 6 tricks.

8) Gorilla Angles
Grades: 3-5
Summary: Throw the banana at each other for points.  Use the circle in the center to set the degree of angle and the slider bar to adjust the force.  The team with the highest point wins.

Symmetry Games

The Symmetry Game
Grades: 3-5

Summary: A quiz type game, students must look at regular polygons and finding the many lines of symmetry in each shape.  If you get the wrong answer, the shape will fold along the lines of symmetry as a hint. You have two chances to guess and also a hint bar for more information about that shape.

Softschools - Symmetry Games
Grades: 1-3

Summary:  Complete the pattern using the dots and the line of symmetry.  Click on the dots to complete the picture.

How to integrate: Shared, Modeled, Independent

Symmetry Activity
Grades: 2-4

Summary:  In this activity you will practice to make patterns that has symmetry.  You can choose to either complete a pattern or create your own.  If you choose to complete a pattern there are three different levels from beginners, intermediates to advance.

BBC - Mission 2110
Grades: 3 and up

Summary: Build your own Mission 2110 Roboid in these daring puzzle games!  There are three games in all and each having to do with a different idea of symmetry. You must complete the puzzle before the robot catches up to you.

Symmetry Painting - Boowa & Kwala
Grades:1-2

Summary:  Complete the picture by clicking on the squares.  There is already a faint outline for the students to follow.  There are also two modes : easy and hard.

CyberChase - Symmetizer and Kaleidoscopes
Grades: 4 -6

Summary: Use symmetry to "symmetrize" your favorite characters with this fun machine.  Choose a picture from one of the characters in Cyberchase to create different patterns that resemble a kaleidoscope. This shows students mirror symmetry.

2D and 3D shapes

1) Castle Shapes
Grades: 1-2
Summary:  This site is separated into 5 sections.

Starter activity part 1 - covers the learning objective and definitions
Starter activity part 2- sorting out 2 and 3D shapes
Main session part 1 - identify the shapes in the floor plan and then use the venn diagram
Main session part 2 - Label the parts of a 3D shape and use a Venn Diagram to sort out shapes with curved faces and vertices.
Plenary - identify properties of 3D shapes

How to integrate: Shared, Independent
Some of the activities and sessions (part 1) would probably be better used as a shared lesson since it's hard to type in words using the IWB, but I still recommend working through the venn diagram on the IWB.  Some of the sections even include worksheets that can be printed.

2) Point of View
Grades: 3-5
Summary: Each shape has a different point of view depending on where you're standing.  This game will show students what objects look like from different sides.

How to integrate:  Shared, Independent
This game is a great way to show students how the shape changes depending on which angle you're looking from.  I find the best way for the students to understand this concept is to show them with real manipulative and then follow up with this game.

3) Dr. Gee's 3D Lab
Grades: 2-3
Summary:  Help Dr. Gee find out what the net shape matches the 3D shape on the side by clicking yes or no.

How to integrate: Modelled
This lesson is easy and quick to do as a warm-up activity or a check for understanding. It's great to use on the Smart Board.
