Seven Super sites about Measuring Length
1) MeasuresGrades: 1-3
Summary: Practice four different strands of measurement:
1) Units of Measurement - look at the list of measurement choices and choose two units that measure mass, capacity and length.
2) Reading Mass - Read the scale and decide on the unit of measurement. (write out the unit in full)
3) Reading Volume and Capacity - Read the scale and decide on the unit of measurement.
4) Reading Length - Read the scale and decide on the unit of measurement.
How to integrate: Guided, Shared, Modeled
This can be a tricky game, especially when reading reading the number in between units. You will need the keyboard for this so it can be tricky to do on the Smartboard.
2) Parcels BBC
Grades: 3-5
Summary: Every parcel needs a stamp. The rate of the parcel depends on the lengths and weight. Once it has been figured out choose the correct stamp to mail the package.
How to integrate: Modeled, Shared
Play as a class to figure out how to mail the parcel. It involves a number of steps and can be quite complicated.
3) Rule Length
Grades: 2-3
Summary: Select the correct measurements by measuring with a ruler.
How to integrate: Shared and Modeled
This is a great starter activity to teach students how to use a ruler.
4) Count us in - Length
Grades: 1-2
Summary: Sore the racers height from the tallest to shortest.
How to integrate: Modeled
This game is a fast one. The players don't change so if you were to ask students to repeat the game most will rely on memory instead of looking at the height.
5) Decide the Distance (decimals)
Grades: 3-6
Summary: This teaching tool teaches students how to calculate the length if measurement does not start at zero. Look at the distance between the two red arrows and choose the correct answer in millimeters or centimeters.
How to integrate: Modeled and Shared
This is a teaching tool and would only work with teacher guidance.
6) What's my Length?
Grades: 2-5
Summary: Students often forget the units. In teaching tool activity, students must try to convert the measurements of millimeters to centimeters.
How to integrate: Modeled and Shared
This would also be a good as a class activity for reading the scale, estimating and converting between units. It can also be used as a way to teach students how to read a ruler.
7) BBC Measurement
Grades: 2-3
Summary: This game combines all the skills we use for length and mass and estimating. Students must help Molly find the package that Mike asks for that fits both the height and weight requirement.
How to integrate: Shared, independent
This activity can easily be a "random" activity, make it more worthwhile by asking questions about the boxes before they choose the second box. (i.e., "If that was 0.8m and we are looking for 1.9m would it be taller or shorter?".
